BENIN

Belgium and Benin, in a spirit of partnership and shared responsibilities, jointly endeavour to improve the well-being of Benin's population and to strengthen its State entities.

WHAT WE DO

Agriculture

Even though the economy of Benin strongly depends on agriculture, the country's agriculture cannot ensure food self-sufficiency. Agricultural challenges comprise the availability of quality inputs, climate variations, and poor product processing and marketing capacity.

We help Benin to improve its performance in agriculture to ensure sustainable food and nutritional sovereignty and to contribute to the country's economic and social development. Our interventions target the promotion of the cashew nut, rice and market gardening value chains, the professionalization of family farms and the achievement of structural investments in communes.

Health

Notwithstanding the State's efforts, malaria, anaemia and respiratory infections still are important causes of death in Benin. The rate of HIV AIDS remains stable (1.2%). But new diseases appear as the result of urbanisation, increasingly sedentary lifestyles and the adoption of new dietary habits.

We intervene at each level of the health system, supporting the Ministry of Health as well as health entities in the country (hospitals, health centres, etc.). Our Programme is developed around the following axes: preventing and fighting diseases, improving the quality of care, empowering medical staff, strengthening partnerships in the sector, promoting medical ethics and responsibilities, installing new health financing mechanisms, improving management in the sector.
BTC implements 8 projects in the domains of health and of agriculture in Benin.
