The work of a Junior

Launch campaigns about hygiene in Rwanda, build ecological paths in Peru… The work Junior Assistants do is very varied.

The Junior Assistant is offered a paid job in a project/programme of BTC in one of the 18 partner countries of Belgian development cooperation or in a project of a Belgian NGO.

What kind of tasks?

It is impossible to list all the tasks of all Juniors here, but we can give you a few examples:

  • Tom, a history masters, organises IT training session for civil servants in Burundi.
  • Charlotte, economic sciences masters, analyses the finances of health districts in Rwanda.
  • Filip, pedagogical sciences masters, sets up child-friendly libraries in schools in Vietnam.
  • Marie, an agricultural engineer, organises training sessions about good hygienic practices for shrimp farmers in Benin.
  • Siyad, with his masters in information & communication, is the focal point of communication for BTC Mali.
  • Mathilde, a socio-anthropology bachelor, integrates gender in local economic policy initiatives in Peru.

Besides, all Junior Assistants take on a few tasks to raise awareness among young Belgians about development cooperation.

  • Regularly contribute to the Junior blog (www.blogcooperation.be)
  • Participate to other awareness-raising initiatives or partnerships, such as Kleur Bekennen/Annoncer La Couleur
  • Possibly develop an awareness-raising initiative of their own with the help of the Junior Programme

Any more examples?

On the blog, to which all Juniors contribute, (www.blogcooperation.be) you will get a broader idea of possible projects and functions.

And what about coaching?

A Junior Assistant is always supported on the job by a ‘coach’; he or she works under the direct supervision of the coach. Usually, the coach is responsible for the project/programme to which the Junior Assistant is assigned.
From Brussels, Junior Programme staff members follow up and support the Junior Assistant during contract time.
