Overseas departure

Two departure moments are organised every year: One in January/February and one in the June to September period. There is a maximum of 100 Junior Assistants assigned to the field at any given time.

In which countries can you be employed as Junior Assistant?

Junior Assistants are assigned to one of the 18 partner countries of Belgian direct bilateral development cooperation:

Morocco - Algeria- Palestinian Territories - Senegal - Mali - Niger - Benin - Burundi - Rwanda - Democratic Republic Congo - Uganda - Tanzania – South Africa - Mozambique - Vietnam - Bolivia - Peru - Ecuador

There, they are working in a project or programme of government cooperation, executed by BTC. Since the end of 2009 Juniors can also be assigned to a project of certain Belgian non-governmental organisations. This kind of cooperation is still in a test phase right now.

For how long?

Junior Assistants are hired for a period of minimum 1 and maximum 2 years. They work under a one-year employment contract that can be extended once.

And what about preparation?

When the Junior Assistant agrees to take on a proposed function, he or she is immediately asked to liberate him/herself to participate to the mandatory pre-departure briefing.

This briefing takes 3 complete weeks, during working hours; it is organised twice a year (just before departure periods) in May and December. This briefing further prepares the Junior Assistant for his new work environment.

During this briefing the Junior Assistant is paid under an employment contract in Brussels.
