On 22 October 2009, Belgium and Burundi signed a new cooperation programme for 2010-2013.
Direct bilateral aid for the period 2010-2013 totals € 150 million (as opposed to € 60 million in 2007-2009). This makes Belgium the largest bilateral donor of the country.
Possibly, in 2011 another € 50 million will be added. This depends, among other things, on the fair conduct of elections in 2010 and acceptable results for good governance.
The new cooperation programme with Burundi focuses on three sectors: Health, education and agriculture. Governance and the fight against corruption will be integrated transversally in these three sectors.
