Central Africa

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the largest and most populous country of Central Africa. Even though it has very diverse natural resources, the Congo is among the poorest countries in the world. Social differences are blatant.

Since 1962, the year of its independence, Rwanda has been a partner country of Belgian cooperation.

Apart from the period that the international community imposed sanctions in the 90s, Burundi has been a partner country of Belgium since its independence in 1962.

After the successful implementation of the first two cooperation programs 2005-2008 and 2008-2012, Belgium allocates a new additional budget of 74 million euros for the next 4 years (2012-2016). 64 million euros will be spent for sector budget support and projects, and a maximal additional tranche of 10 million can be added to it.
