sanitation in Kampala Uganda

Uganda
| From polythene bags to public toilets

Rwanda
| From rubble to a regional referral hospital

In 2008, an earthquake almost reduced Bushenge hospital (South-West Rwanda) to rubble, bringing services and care to a standstill. For the last three years, doctors and nurses tended to patients in emergency tents. In March 2012, all patients have been transferred to new facilities built with the support of the Belgian Development Cooperation.

Tanzania
| HIV/AIDS awareness-raising at primary schools in Tanzania

An estimated 7% of 15-24 year olds in Tanzania are infected with HIV*; 55% of new infections occur among 15-24 year-olds . Yet understanding of the disease and its causes is still poor, and sex education is not widespread. Teachers face major challenges, including a lack of resources dedicated to HIV/AIDS awareness and persisting cultural taboos.

Rwanda
| Waste valorisation and social recognition

In Rwanda, women boost development. They have been major players in post-genocide reconstruction. Today, many women take steps to escape from misery and generate revenue outside of agriculture.

Peru
| Think about it | Drug abuse prevention and drug addicts rehabilitation in Peru

Hang on, my friend! One moment please... You have to listen to me before you leave. I promised to love myself, to respect my self, to do the utmost for myself but especially to never let you down. Yet, you see, I could not resist the temptation...’ These are the lyrics of a song written by Douglas and Robert – aka Leo – 16 and 17 years old. They do not need drugs to talk about drugs, and its consequences.

Rwanda
| Better sanitation for a healthy environment

Belgium and the European Commission are co-funding a Water and Sanitation Programme which is rehabilitating rundown water networks in the Southern Province of Rwanda. As part of that programme, more than 1,000 ecological latrines will be built in 80 schools for more than 70,000 pupils.

Rwanda
| When electricity makes progress

In the west of Rwanda, on the hills near Lake Kivu, about 6,800 families live in Nyamyumba. Recently 416 families have gained access to electricity thanks to the electrification programme. Change has arrived. The local administration is finally computerised and can do away with its typewriters; locals can develop many revenue-generating activities so they do not have to rely solely on agriculture. Another 480 families have asked for access and are expecting to be connected.

Senegal
| Key actors for the water sector

When talking about water in Senegal, the Associations of Well Users (ASUFOR) are major decision-making bodies. In rural settings, the ASUFORs manage the production and distribution of water as well as the maintenance of installations and equipment. Women, who are the first users of water, have little say in these decision-making bodies. Ami Colle Mbodj is the president of the ASUFOR of Ouadiour in Fatick.

Tanzania
